Junior Lifters Compete For JWC Spot

Weightlifting appoints 2016 Rio Olympic Games Manager

Weightlifters are competing hard to win a spot in the Fiji team for the IWF Junior World Championships which is from June 1-8 in Suva. A 14-member team composed of lifter from all around the country been named. With the exception of Timothy Vakuruivalu, the rest of the lifters are looking forward to their first international competition. Lifter Merewalesi Vusonitokalau who hails from Joma, Kadavu was identified during the Fiji National Sports Commission’s outreach program in Kadavu last year. She has re-located to Suva and attends Suva Grammar School where she continues training and be eligible for team inclusion to the JWC. Another recent find is Wini Mekula of Wainimala, Naitisiri and is currently a student at Adi Cakabau School.

“The 14 athletes have been selected for the preliminary entry after the four monthly trials from December 2018 to March 2019. “The final team will be named after the remaining final trials on April 20th. The final entries for the JWC closes on April 30,” stated Weightlifting Fiji

“These trials also serve as a test for team selection for the Pacific Games, which will also include senior athletes. Competition for places in the final team is intense, with a number of athletes within 10kg of each other. WF is looking at fielding a final team of 7 to 10 athletes to represent Fiji at the JWC.

“This will be Fiji’s largest participation at any World Championships. Former national weightlifting and athletics rep, Iowana Sera Vakaloloma will manage the team at the championships.

“Sera completed the OSEP team manager’s course and she is also the section manager for Weightlifting to the 2019 Pacific Games. The team is coached by Della Shaw-Elder and Henry Elder and assisted by Asaeli Tuikenawa and Levenia Adilutunacawacawa.”
